Treading Softly
Some people navigate the world quietly, treading softly wherever they go, leaving only a small
impression, but an impression that lasts nonetheless. Richard Spaven is such a person, his
humble attitude and down-to-earth, warm personality actually draws people to him and when
you hear what he has to say musically on the drum set, you know you should be paying close
attention. In this current world of cut-throat business, hire and fire mentality and quick-fix it
is refreshing to listen to a player that can deliver without adding any further brouhaha to the
mix, a player that has his own unique take on how to make things swing, groove and excite,
not only the artist that he is working for, but the audience too. With all these qualities, you

Richard Spaven lives in England but his career takes him all over the world performing with artists Jose James, The Cinematic Orchestra, TY, Robert Mitchell 3IO and DJ Vadim and One Self featuring Yarah Bravo among many others.



On top of his studio and touring commitments, Richard Spaven also works on occasion as a music director with BBC special programming.



Richard Spaven has also released his debut solo album 'Spaven’s 5ive' on the UK’s Jazz Refreshed label.



Spaven's sublime intuitive drumming and his personable nature quickly established him as a favourite amongst the Jazzre:freshed faithful. In many ways, Spaven sums up what jazzre:freshed is all about. By connecting the dots as he seamlessly traverses between genres, he weaves a thread of jazz throughout each one. He is as comfortable manning the kit behind classically trained piano virtuoso Robert Mitchell, as he was when touring the world with hall of fame hip-hop emcee (the late) GURU.



Spaven is equally at home when providing the percussive undertone to the futuristic sounds of maestro Mark de Clive Lowe and the prolific 4Hero. It is no surprise then that he is the backbone for jazz vocalist Jose James’ band as well as conducting the beats for The Cinematic Orchestra.
