Gerry Brown was born on November 9, 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. After training in conservatory in the early '70s Brown came to Europe in 1972 playing drums for John Lee. He stayed and recorded with Chris Hinze, Joachim Kuhn, Toots Thielemans and Charlie Mariano. On his return to New York in 1976 he played with Stanley Clarke before joining Chick Corea's Return To Forever. In 1979 he returned to Europe to play the Montreux International Jazz Festival with Didier Lockwood. He remained in France and Germany for a while, but by 1984 was back in New York recording with Arthur Blythe.



Gerry Brown brings forth a wealth of experience whenever he performs. Currently supplying the percussive arsenal for Motown legend and superstar, Stevie Wonder, he can reflect on his training from his formative year.



Gerry started playing drums at the age of four and studied rudimental snare drum, mallets, and timpani with Elaine Watts. He was involved with the All City Music Program in Philadelphia, where he met and became friends with bass player Stanley Clarke. After graduation, Gerry attended the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and studied music along with fellow classmates Stanley Clarke, Alphonso Johnson, and John Lee.



Prior to his current position with Stevie Wonder, Gerry was the drummer for the immensely successful world tour (Dancing On The Ceiling) of Lionel Richie.



During that time period Gerry also worked with Philip Bailey from Earth Wind & Fire and jazz piano legend Joe Sample. While teaching in Hamburg, Germany, he played with the NDR Big Band, where Gerry was broadcast throughout Europe over North German Radio.



Gerry has also performed and recorded with the Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Roberta Flack, and recorded several monumental albums with Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea.



Gerry resides now in Los Angeles and when not performing with Stevie, divides his time among great artists such as Marcus Miller, Dave Samuels, Check Loeb, and John Lee.



Gerry continues to actively teach and has released his first instructional drum video. The video entitled "R & B Drumming with Gerry Brown" has been met with critical acclaim by many music publications. Gerry's insight as an educator and performer has establish him as a sought after clinician for Yamaha Drums, Zildjian Cymbals & Drumsticks, and Evans Drumheads. His recent clinics and performances have taken him all over the world with many festivals and appearances scheduled for the coming years.
