For its 2026 return, Guitar Center’s Drum-Off changed up the format. Rather than have each drummer blast off into a five-minute drum solo, each finalist started off performing a one-minute jam with the house band -choosing from a selection of instrumental songs that were written specifically for the competition. After that, each competitor launched into their solo performances.
The Contest
Drum-Off auditions opened May 1 at Guitar Center stores in the USA. Participants could visit any store to record and submit an original three-minute on-camera audition video. Every location featured a premium acoustic drum kit available for auditions, with a streamlined process designed to make submissions easy and consistent. Eventually, on August 20, the last six finalists below performed live in front of an audience and a panel of judges for the title of Drum-Off Champion.

Thomas Lang interview
- Thomas, the Guitar Center Drum-Off is finally back after a ten-year hiatus. How does it feel to see it return to the calendar, and what makes this competition so significant to the drumming community?
"The Drum-Off is the coolest event on the drumming calendar every year. It is a proper celebrity Hollywood event with red carpets and lots of celebrities attending. It is a real Hollywood show with everything you can imagine that's part of a Hollywood show. And it is, of course, the largest drumming competition in the US, which still is the leader in all things drumming in the world. So yes, this is a very significant and important competition. It's great to see it back after a 10-year hiatus."
- Thomas has a deeply personal history with this event, both behind the kit and behind the judges' table.
"I was lucky enough to be a judge for 12 years before that, and now I'm back as a judge. I also performed at the event three times in the past. It's just a wonderful happening to see this great event back on the map and on the calendar, and I can't wait to attend again next year and judge again next year."
- The talent pool this year was incredibly deep. How difficult was it for the panel to choose a winner, and what does a victory here mean for a young drummer's future?
"We had some really incredible young players competing, and I think the choice was very clear. It was pretty much unanimous. There's yet another young talent on the scene now, because this is always truly the start of a long career. If you look back at previous winners like Glenn Sobel, Eric Moore, or Thomas Pridgen-people like that-the Guitar Center Drum-Off is what kick-started their career. So it's an incredible event."
- Beyond the exposure and launching a career, the actual prize package is famously massive. What exactly does the champion take home this year?
"The prize is pretty impressive too, of course-you know, $25,000, any endorsement you can imagine, a gear holiday in Hawaii, a feature on Drumeo, and all that kind of stuff. So it's probably the coolest drumming competition out there. Definitely in the US. It's been a cool evening and, of course, fun to see all our friends and colleagues, the other judges. We're all friends, and it's a fun evening hanging out together and watching some amazing new drumming talent."
