Here is a look at the elite who received the highest honour in commercial music.

Nashville, Tennessee-based country group Lady Antebellum turned out to be the biggest winner: they took home no less than five awards.

Lady Antebellum's album 'Need You Now' - featuring Chad Cromwell and David Huff on drums, percussion and loops - won as record of the year and as best country album. Lady Antebellum also won three awards for 'Need You Now' as song of the year, as best country song and as best country performance by a duo or group with vocals.

Eccentric singer Lady Gaga consolidated her popularity and collected three trophies. So did Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and John Legend, who also won three awards, including one for 'Wake Up! on which he collaborates with drummer Questlove and The Roots.

'The Suburbs' by the Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire, featuring Jeremy Gara on drums and Régine Chassagne on percussion, was named album of the year, a surprise to many.

Rapper Eminem, who was nominated in ten categories and thus favorite of the evening, had to be content with two Grammys, including best rap album for 'Recovery'.

Surprisingly, the award as best new artist was not awarded to Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber but to the 26-year-old jazz musician Esperanza Spalding, who has worked with artists such as Otis Brown III, Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, Quintino Cinalli and Jamey Haddad. It is the first time in 35 years that this award goes to a jazz musician.
