Drummer Patrick Carney and guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach, better known as The Black Keys, took home three big awards: best rock album 'El Camino', best rock song, and best rock performance of the year (both for Lonely Boy). Dan ended up the night's top winner with four trophies: he also bagged the coveted Grammy as producer of the year. In addition, Dr. John's album 'Locked Down', which Dan produced, was voted as blues album of the year.
Mumford & Sons collected a major Grammy for 'Babel' as album of the year. Ben Lovett (keys, accordion, drums), Marcus Mumford (lead vocals, guitar, drums), Ted Dwane (string bass, drums, guitar) and Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, guitar, resonator guitar) also won best long form music video. Lead singer Marcus Mumford said in his acceptance speech:
"We figured we weren't going to win anything because The Black Keys have been sweeping up all day, and deservedly so."
More Grammy winners
Skrillex (real name: Sonny John Moore) won best dance/electronica album for 'Bangarang', best dance recording for Bangarang featuring Sirah, and best remixed recording. Just like last year, his first appearance at the Grammys.
Rappers Jay-Z en Kanye West earned three Grammys: two for Niggas In Paris as best rap song and best rap performance, a third one for the best rap/sung collaboration No Church In The Wild, along withR&B singer Frank Ocean.
Frank took a second Grammy for 'Channel Orange' as best urban contemporary album. Jazz artists Chick Corea and Esperanza Spalding each took a pair of Grammys too.
Carrie Underwood won best country solo performance for Blown Away, Zac Brown Band, featuring Chris Fryar on drums and Daniel de los Reyes on percussion, won best country album for 'Uncaged'.
Kelly Clarkson bagged a Grammy award as best pop vocal album for 'Stronger'.
Last year's big winner, Adele, won the first Grammy of the night for her single Set Fire to the Rain (Live) in the category pop solo performance. "I just wanted to be part of the night, because I loved it last year, obviously", she said referring to her record of six Grammy awards in 2012.
Grammy Awards ceremony
The 55th edition of the Grammy Awards ceremony took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The live telecast, hosted by LL Cool J, was packed with blockbuster performances.
Taylor Swift opened the Grammys Sunday night with a spectacular Alice-in-Wonderland-type take on her hit, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Justin Timberlake debuted new tracks. Alicia Keys stepped out from behind the piano to beat her own drum during Maroon 5's Daylight, before the band backed her on Girl on Fire.
Sting and Bruno Mars performed a duet onLocked Out of Heaven and Walking on the Moon. Elton John and Ed Sheeran did the same on The A Team.
Tributes
Rihanna paid tribute to Bob Marley with the help of members of the Marley family. Several members of americana acts, including Alabama Shakes and Mumford & Sons, paid tribute to the late drummer Levon Helm with a spirited rendition of The Weight.
The Grammys are determined by about 13,000 voting members of the Recording Academy.
