On September 11, 2011 the 8th edition of the Adams Drumworld festival took place in the Drumworld store in Ittervoort, The Netherlands. Again, this year’s roster was packed with renowned artists from all over the world. The line-up held artists from Belgium, Greece, the United Kingdom, the United States, Holland, Bulgaria and Cuba. We're starting the Drumworld video series with artists from the last three nations: Martin Verdonk (Netherlands), featuring Vladimir Petrov (Bulgaria) and Cuban trumpet player Amik Guerra (Cuba).
Tycoon endorsing artist Martin Verdonk was invited to play the festival just a couple of weeks before the show date. Having already performed at the Drumworld stage in 2008, this time he had invited Petrov and Guerra to join him on stage.
Amik Guerra Lig-Long, from Havana, Cuba, and now residing in Liechtenstein, is probably best known for his membership with the Afro Cuban All Stars. Besides his work with this world famous band, he has played with many artists and is a returning artist at the North Sea Jazz festival.
Vladimir Petrov, a master on the marimba from Bulgaria, teamed up with Martin days before the festival to put together the program the trio would be playing as the third act on the Drumworld stage. Amik flew in from Switzerland on the morning of festival. The three showed incredible musical skills in performing and getting a show together in just hours before actually going on stage.
Throughout the show, Martin hosted and explained about the different tunes the guys played. Even seemingly easy jams culminated in to full grown songs that deserve recording sessions that can be distributed out in to the world without a doubt. Whether these pros have rehearsed for hours, or just play along as they go, any insecurities they might have go unnoticed. Playing each and every piece as steady and convincing as it can get, the public showed much appreciation for this highlight and completely different performance than one might expect at a drum festival.
Below you find five videos of the three performing, and of course a cool video of Martin's solo; a demonstration in speed, technique and how you can approach the congas in musical ways that are, at the least, highly inspiring.
