When Gabor Dornyei hosted the Remo Sandlane Sessions we took the opportunity to interview the Hungarian drummer who is now residing in London. In this first in a series of articles about Gabor Dornyei he tells you all about his gear, the additional instruments and explains thoroughly why he plays these brands. With this article there are four videos covering it all: his drums, the cymbals, why he has a drum/percussion setup and all about his sticks and more. First, here's the scoop: in 2015, Gabor will have his own Vic Firth signature sticks. Congratulations to Gabor on that. But there is more: in the following articles we'll publish our interview with Gabor, and we will close with the three live studio recordings from the Sandlane Recording facilities in Rijen, The Netherlands.
The dvd 'Rhythm Frontier' with Pete Lockett Late 2014 Gabor Dornyei and Pete Lockett released a 3D dvd called 'Rhythm Frontier'. And we encourage that. Especially when it is a production like Pete and Gabor have put together; it makes you wonder why dvd's don't sell anymore. It features 90 minutes of extreme talents covering Pete Lockett's broad world of percussion combined with the rhythms of Gabor on drumset and percussion. In our second article we talk with Gabor about this unique dvd where the idea and the music all came from.
Gabor Dornyei Gabor's cv is undoubtedly one any drummer would dream of. He still teaches and is faculty member at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London. Just to give a quick insight on his work, here are some highlights of his career already. He won the Golden Drumstick Award in 2004, recorded for Walt Disney and worked for three years as the drummer of the Hungarian National Radio's big-band.
Since committing himself to sight reading, he has played almost all the major musicals, like Fame, Rent, Jekyll and Hyde, Les Miserables, Sister Act, The Full Monty, Thriller Live and We Will Rock You. For 2,5 years long he was the drummer for the West End Michael Jackson production 'Thriller Live'. That gig brought him literally all over the globe.
More recently, he recorded several lessons and some sessions with his Thunder Duo for Drumchannel that you can find on their website. Watch some of those Drumchannel videos below. In 2015, Thunder Duo celbrates its first decade, during which they played major drum festivals and hosted clinics all over the world.
