In our previous article covering Simon Phillips' clinic at Drumland we showed three videos where Simon Phillips demonstrates his 'warm-up' exercises. This article features the videos with the drum solo he played as the spectacular opening of the clinic. Simon Phillips did a sold out clinic tour in The Netherlands in May, 2014. We even stated it might have been a regular clinic for him, but definitely not for the audience. The videos with this article prove just that.
When Simon started playing drums in his father's Dixieland band at the age of 12, he already knew he wanted to be a professional drummer. A glorious career followed in which his diversity as a drummer is unparalleled. He finds his musical way just as easy in Jazz and Fusion as in Rock, Metal and other genres. Looking at his discography you will see a range of artists that don't fit many musicians. From his early beginnings, Simon fits them all. Wheter it is recording tracks for the Irish family band The Corrs, The Who or Hiromi, he has the ability to adapt to every style without losing his sound, style or personality. He settles and blends with the musical scene he encounters. That is true musicianship.
Of course it is all about making the big miles in practicing and playing with others to become a fragment of the artist he is. When going through his catalog of recordings and performances the difference in artists and styles is enormous. That is one of the reasons his drum vocabulaire is as big as it is. As said, the Miles you make on your instrument are important. Technique just as much, and perhaps even more relevant when playing drum solos.
Enjoy the four up-close videos from different angles of Simon Phillips playing one giant drum solo. We cut them to four separate videos, just because we wouldn't want you to download video files that have movie-like sizes.
