Katy Perry took home three trophies including Video of the Year for the video of Firework. Her song E.T, featuring Kanye West, was awarded twice: as Best Collaboration and for Best Visual Effects.

Adele's song Rolling in the Deep was worth three Moon Men awards: for Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

Lady Gaga earned two awards for Born This Way: Best Female Video and Best Video With A Message. The eccentric singer surprised the audience by appearing on stage as her male alter ego Jo Calderone from the You and Ivideo wearing a black suit and shirt.

Beyoncé won only one award this year; Best Choreography for Run the World (Girls). During the awards the singer announced that she and her husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child. Moments later she performed her single Love on Top live on stage and told the audience: "I want you to feel the love growing inside of me" and showed of a baby bump.

After a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, crooner Bruno Mars – flanked by a full band with a great drummer - knocked out a fantastic rendition of her track Valerie, complete with four-part backup harmonies:
