'Back to the Sunset,' Dafnis Prieto's 2018 Big Band project has won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 61th annual Grammys that was hosted by Alicia Keys. The legend himself, Steve Gadd, took home the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. The Grammy for Best Music Film was for 'Quincy,' the documentary with and about star producer Quincy Jones. However, the biggest winner must be named, and that is Brandi Carlile's drummer Chris Powell.
Steve Gadd won the Grammy of 'Best Contemporary Instrumental Album' at the cost of Simon Phillips' nomination for his 2018 album 'Protocol 4'.
During the award show, Steve was in The Netherlands recording with Dutch Jazz chromatic harmonica player Hermien Deurlo. They spent three days recording her music in Wisseloord Studio's with Tony Scherr (bass) and Kevin Hayes on piano.
And where Kacey Musgraves took home four Grammys for Album of the Year, Best Country Album ('Golden Hour'), Best Country Solo Performance (Butterflies) and Best Country Song (Space Cowboy), Brandi Carlile with drummer Chris Powell scored in three categories: Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song (both for The Joke) and Best Americana Album 'By The Way, I Forgive You'.
A Star Is Born Chris Powell also plays on the soundtrack for the movie 'A Star Is Born', with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga - who also won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Together with Paul Francis, Chris Johnson and Anthony LoGerfo, Chris takes care of all the drums on this album.
