Rocky Bryant’s diverse drumming abilities have kept him on stage and in the studio with some of the best names in music. He has performed and/or recorded with Dianne Reeves (grammy award winning CD), Branford Marsalis & Buckshot LeFonque, Lalah Hathaway, Peter Frampton, Maxwell, Cyndi Lauper, David Sanborn, Faith Hill, Brandy, Daryl Hall(Hall & Oates), Des’ree, Paula Abdul, Billy Joel, and The Family Stand to highlight but a few. “From the beginning, versatility has been in the forefront of my musical vision.”
Growing up in NJ and having access to the broad musical scene of NYC helped to set the stage for the wide range of playing experiences that have followed. Rocky started taking drum lessons while in the fifth grade. While being taught in a somewhat classical style, he was also moved by the popular R&B of bands like The Ohio Players, and Sly & the Family Stone. Rocky involved himself in every musical situation he could find including, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. He auditioned for and landed a position in the NJ All State Orchestra while in the sixth and seventh grade. While in eleventh grade he did his first recording with actor/singer Joe Morton.
After high school graduation, Rocky attended the Drummers Collective in NY to study vibraphone. Soon after, he began touring and continued recording with a host of artists from the NY area.
Throughout his travels, Rocky also became interested in writing. He studied composition with Edgar Grana in NY, when touring permitted. He has since co-written for the CD’s, Music Evolution (Buckshot LeFonque) and Souvenir (Ricky Peterson).
Rocky is presently developing songs for a recording which will allow his drumming and writing abilities to shine.
