Artist biography Jose Carlos "Jay Kalo" Sánchez Portilla
Jose Carlos Sánchez, aka Jay Kalo, was born in Havana (Cuba) on September 15, 1997. He began his musical career at 10 and studied percussion at the Cuban National Art School (ENA). He won first place at the International Drum Festival in Cuba twice, in consecutive years.
At only 17 years old, his first trip was to New York to perform with the "Big Band Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra", where he met and played with Wynton Marsalis. Upon completing his studies, he began playing and recording with numerous national and international artists, including Alain Pérez (album "El cuento de la buena pipa"), Omara Portuondo (jazz festival "Barranquijazz," Colombia), María del Mar Bonet (tour "Ultramar"), and others.
His characteristic style, which pairs musicality with groove, precise timing, and articulate phrasing on the drum kit, makes him one of the exciting new drummers on the international drum scene.
