On January 20 2018, Vic Firth hosted its first ever #vfJAMS LIVE recording session at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California. Vic Firth will continue to post these sessions throughout this year with full performances, interviews, transcriptions, play-along tracks and prize giveaways. Devon Taylor's videos are coming next week, followed by Sarah Thawer, Eric Harland, Benny Greb, Mark Guiliana and others. This first episode features Matt Garstka performing the track G'ska Funk, a composition composed by bandleader Robert Sput Searight and Matt Garstka himself.

Matty G, officially named Matthew Wolfgang Garstka, is a gospel drummer who has studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
Matt Garstka has just completed his tour with Gokh Bi System, an African hip-hop group, spanning from Montreal, Canada to Asheville, North Carolina, which included a performance in front of a crowd of over 10,000 at The Montreal JazzFestival in Canada. Matthew currently attends Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA as a performance major on drum set, along with continually playing at clubs with Jo Sallins throughout the Northeast. Matt released a solo album in 2007 "Heavy Volume."
The Beginning:
Matt Garstka began playing the drum set at age 8, giging at age 12, and recording at age 13. Matt then began playing auxiliary percussion (congas, djembe etc.) in his Dads reggae band at age 11. When Matt turned 12 he started playing drum set at reggae gigs. A year later, Matt Garstka was lucky enough to meet and play with the great Jo Sallins. He appeared on Jo Sallins CD/DVD entitled Mr. Cool at the age of 14. Several professional studio recordings with Jo Sallins and his father, Greg Garstka, have followed. Matt was featured on Jo Sallins newest CD/DVD entitled The Present.
The Past Few Years:
In the years following, Matt released an EP with a local punk/hardcore band called Backstab in 2006, was featured in magazines such as "Drum! magazine" and "Modern Drummer."
Matt Garstka released his debut solo album, in 2007, entitled 'Heavy Volume' which features Joel Stroetzel of Killswitch Engage, Chris Regan of FNB, Jo Sallins and many more.
Most recently Matt Garstka has performed at The Montreal Jazz Festival, Detroit Festival of Colors, Greenriver festival, Burlington Jazz Festival, Floyd Fest, The Springfield Jazz Festival, Rock Against Racism Festival, The Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA, and Berklee College of Music.
Matthew Garstka most recently teamed up with Gokh Bi System. This group features 5 musicians from Senegal West Africa mixing Traditional African style with hip-hop.
Matt Garstka has performed with other musicians such as Rohn Lawrence, David Stolz, Tony Smith, Doug Johns, Toni Blackman, Derek Jordon, and Evan Marien.
