What can you say about someone who's name has become synonymous with an instrument? There are people in Brasil who know absolutely nothing about pandeiro, but they know that Suzano plays it!
Call him the Jimi Hendricks or Jaco Pastorius of the pandeiro. Suzano built off of his influences, Jorginho do Pandeiro and Celsinho Silva, and pushed the limits of what the pandeiro is capable of doing.
The combination of growing up playing samba in the streets of Rio, while listening to rock and fusion, led to Suzano's experiements. Using a thick, loose skin and closely mic'ing the pandeiro Suzano found ways to emulate a drum kit on the pandeiro. At the same time he adapted all sorts of rhythms to the instrument and put his personal touch on all of them.
