Kalle Mathiesen is first and foremost an artist, then a musician. However, most people probably think of him as the latter.
An artist because Kalle Mathiesen starts his compositions in much the same way as a painter looks at his empty canvas: - the start of a journey into the unknown where the direction is only decided by intuition, and the destination is already known to the subconscious.
One experiences great versatility in his completed picture of music; journeys to the unknown where the composer lovingly leads you home - a home which might be very different to that you expected. The Earth set upon its head, but for the better, for the more true.
The pictures are funny, sad, surprising, angry, longing, ugly and beautifully barrier-breaking. Often this all occurs in one picture alone.
Kalle Mathiesen is primarily a drummer. Additionally, he is a multi-artist/musician who plays all the instruments himself in the project 'Kalles Worldtour'.
This solo concept has evolved from several different angles. It is partly composed and recorded to the exact note and partly as a live project, where instant improvisation has been the main idea.
For example, playing to the sound of a sampled dog (after having tried the real thing on the streets of Italy), or playing bass and drums at the same time, melodic and singing; taping the audience applause on site and throwing it back to them as a newly-sampled 'Clapping Symphony'.
All of these little megalomaniacal thoughts have more than once lifted the roof off music venues and festivals where Kalle Mathiesen has played. He has among other things been a busker in Italy and Spain with this project; has performed it in a great music hall in Russia and played it at various Danish music events.
Apart from this Kalle Mathiesen is a live musician featuring in a range of bands which play a great variety of musical genres. He will not be tied down by one style as he feels there are only two kinds of music - good or bad. Heartfelt or indifferent. Sincere or insincere.
Kalle Mathiesen is a very energetic drummer who covers a wide field with his talent. Over the years he has played jazz (also intense freeform), rock, punk, pop, bulgarian folk music. All of this in the company of many different musicians.
Kalle Mathiesen has played with avantgarde guitarplayer Pierre Dørge, hippierockers Burnin Red Ivanhoe,
Norwegien jazzgroup Tri´O`Trang, pop/rock singer Anders Blichfeldt, and Estonian guitarfaenomanan Jaak Sooaar, among others.
Kalle Mathiesen's desire is that music be used to help people to rest in the present, to take a break, to wonder - that music help people to focus on what is right instead of wasting so much time on the opposite!
Kalle Mathiesen definitely thinks that he composes music because he cannot help it, and the reason he plays solo concerts is that he believes in something bigger than the self.
People like Bill Frisell, Frank Zappa, Jack Dejohnnete, Cassandra Wilson, Sting and Igor Stravinsky have been a big inspiration.
In 2010 Danish drummer Kalle Mathiesen released 'El Baterista Loco', a cd/dvd by his Kalles World Tour project.
