Jaap Vissering (Bellingwolde, 1981) is best known as drummer in (melo)metalcore outfit Instil. He plays drums since 1987 and received lessons from Mariano Salgado Escudero. Jaap Vissering:

"First of all my family is very musically. My dad played in bands his whole live so its not that astounding that I already got my first drum kit when I was 6. It was a 3-piece kit with an old ride cymbal. I learned some beats from the drummer of my fathers band and I started to play with some Bruce Springsteen and Steppenwolf tapes."

Jaap started to take drumlessons and got a bigger 5 piece kit (a blue Maxwin) when he was about 9 years old. By then he got his first Nirvana and Guns n' Roses tapes so he started rocking his drums more and more. No wonder he names Dave Grohl, Igor Cavalera, Ome Willem and Animal as inspirational.



Jaap Vissering started his first band at high school: Nitrogen (punkrock/ hardcore). They released two demos.

"I played drums and did a lot of vocals too. When I was 17, around 1998, I founded a new oldschool hardcore band named Cease Assistance with some guys I knew from shows in a local club. At that age I also bought my present drumkit: a 5 piece Pearl Session Series. After three years we became more metallic and we decided to change the name into Instil."

Still under the moniker of Cease Assistance the band released their demo "If It Depends On.." in 2000.



Besides his hardcore/metal bands Jaap Vissering also played marimba in a group from the local music school. They even played in Poland! But at the age of 18 he quit taking lessons. Jaap continues:

"I also played some theatre shows with my dad. I also did some studio recordings for him and some collegues."

Jaap's father, Alex Vissering, is a famous singer/song writer in the Northern part of the Netherlands.



It is with Instil that Jaap is most succesful. In two years they toured five times through Europe, played more than a hundred shows including appearances on festivals like Goodlife Festival, HellfireFest, Shadows of Disgust, Hydrargyum en het Noordschok Festival. In June 2004 their debut album "Fire Reflects in Ashes" was released worldwide via the Dutch label Garden of Exile.



As first and only Dutch band so far Instil even did a mini-tour through Iceland. With the extensive summer tours this trip made most impression:

"The trip to Iceland inspires more than you can even imagine, especially when knowing the Björk was part of the audience at one show."

Despite the time consuming job as drummer in Instil Jaap Vissering plays guitar in an oldschool hardcore band and bass in a very aggressive mosh band called Puritan. Some people seem to eat, sleep, breath and live music...



Looking into the future, Vissering reveils some of his plans:

"We played almost whole Europe, now it’s time to play some other continents. Japan and America are waiting. I also want to record a lot of albums and play drums until I die, or even in my coffin :)"
