To date, drummer Aaron Comess, a founding member of the Grammy nominated, ten million plus album selling band Spin Doctors, has played on, written on and/or produced over two hundred albums with an acclaimed and diverse roster of artists such as, Joan Osborne, Bilal, Rachael Yamagata, New York Electric Piano, Isaac Hayes, James Maddock, Marc Cohn and Chris Whitley to name a few.

He has released three recording of original instrumental songs as a leader. Catskills Cry ,Beautiful Mistake and Blues for Use are collections of organic melodic songs with plenty of room for a conversation between the musicians. It reflects ComessÂ’ diversity and talent as a performer and his open and forward thinking approach to playing and composing music. He recently released the straight ahead jazz record " the aaron comess quintet "

He has performed live and on televisions with some of music’s biggest artists including Joan Osborne, Natasha Bedingfield, Edie Brikell, André Bocelli, David Foster, Aaron Neville, German superstar Marius Westernhagen and Spin Doctors.

Aaron Comess is best known as drummer in The Spin Doctors. He is also session drummer, studio owner and producer.



Comess started playing drums when he was nine years old, and soon after received private lessons from Jack Iden in Dallas. Around the age of twelce Comess got his drum kit, followed by lessons with Rick Latham for a couple of years. Latham's book "Advanced Funk Studies" had just come out at that time.



Aaron Comess considers himself very lucky with his musical education:

"From junior high school onwards I was involved with music all the time: big band, and classical percussion as well. And then I went to High School it was the Arts Magnet High School, a performing arts high school! A lot of terrific musicians have come out from there: Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, Erykah Badu. I was studying small group, big band, music theory, symphony orchestra - half the day I was doing that, and the other half I was jamming with my friends and all the weekend too. That kind of variety and versatility really helps you as a player."

After Aaron Comess graduated, he studied at Berklee for a year with Tommy Campbell, then moved back to Texas and just played every gig under the sun for a year – jazz, orchestral, blues bands, rock bands, wedding gigs, everything. Next he moved to New York and attended The New School, following workshops with jazz masters like Jimmy Cobb, Jim Hall, and Reggie Workman. He also studied privately with Bernard Purdie. Around the same time he formed a band called The Spin Doctors.



Currently, aside from playing with the Spin Doctors, Comess works as an in-demand session musician and a producer for various artists. He is in the process of co-writing and recording new material for an upcoming Spin Doctors album. Aaron Comess lives in New York City, where he plays with numerous rock, jazz and experimental bands.
