As one of the house percussionists with Motown Records in Detroit, Ms. Bobbye Hall accomplished more as a teenager than most musicians do in a lifetime. Though she largely remained uncredited due to her age, she is nevertheless present on many classic Motown tracks. She can be seen here playing in studio with The Temptations: youtu.be/lZCGF2kN7Dw
After moving to Los Angeles, Bobbye remained a part of the west coast Motown sound by continuing to appear on records by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, among others. However, her presence and reputation continued to grow and she quickly became a first-call session musician for all kinds of sessions: rock, r&b, funk, singer-songwriter, movie soundtrack, commercial work, etc.
Her playing can be heard on record with: Bill Withers, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Aretha Franklin, David Byrne, The Doors, Smokey Robinson, Sarah Vaughan, and many, many more.
It was a true pleasure to get to film this episode with Ms. Hall in the windy desert outside of Los Angeles.
