Travis Orbin: "mOcean is a rock band from Virginia Beach, VA, and was the second of said sessions. These guys are super young and talented! I did three tunes for 'em, writing the parts the night before just prior to leaving for the studio. Unsurprisingly, much was altered on the fly -- which is par for the course for such sessions at ol' Oceanic -- and as a result there are some bits that are either improv'ed or written moments before tracking. And of course, there was no time for rehearsal so I'm pretty glued to, well, what's left of my chart(s), haha.
I used Taylor's personal bass drum and snare and my own Pearl Reference Pure tom-toms. I'm playing the rack in front for the same reasons listed in the video descriptions for The Countdown Starts Now's "Admit It" and This War We Live's "Flood The Hollow". The cymbals are 14" MDM hats, 8" BRT splash, 21" NRG ride, 19" LTD custom china (older model), and yes - Zildjian crashes. I brought my set of BRT crashes for the session, and when setting up noticed a crack (must've happened earlier in the week with the first band!) and you could hear the 'sizzle' in the mic. The band happened to have cymbals with them, so we threw 'em up.
Notes:
0:18 - Taylor's idea, not mine! hahaha
2:23 - Mangini-esque quick three-hit question/answer on the snare+kick
2:51 - over-the-bar snare fill-in leads into the outro"
