This track is from 55 Cancri, a prog/djent project based out of France, spearheaded by songwriter/guitarist Jovan Milenkovic and guitarist/bassist/producer NùN. They are currently looking to recruit a singer, bassist and drummer so please contact them if you're interested!
I corresponded with Jovan throughout the drum composition process. He had the great idea to include a time-lapse-style drum setup for the intro; it probably took me as long to whittle down all the footage and put it together as the whole drumming segment, haha.
I used the same gear as my first session at Anup's: Pearl Reference Pure tom-toms, Reference brass snare and a Vision kick. The heads are Vintage Emperor clear, Controlled Sound and Powerstroke 3 clear, respectively. Cymbals: 21" DRK ride, 19" MDM crash, 14" DRK hats, 'stack' (14" ICON stacker / 16" ALT china), 13" BRT/DRK hats, 18" MDM crash, 19" LTD china (new model) and 16" ALT china. Also like the first session ("Wizardry Mind"), I switched out chinas for certain parts of the tune, merely to give it a slightly different sound. I also punched in to close my 13" hats at 4:53, then re-opened 'em at 6:01.
Notes:
2:27 - 2:40 -- dual hi-hat pedal ostinato (RLR, LRL); floor tom locks in with guitar
2:53 - 3:07 -- stack complements guitar stabs
3:08 - 3:14 -- 3-16 superimposition on stack
3:49 - 3:56 -- pedal hat occurs on the half notes to provide some semblance of where the pulse resides, heh
5:51 -- quick china smack, this was tough
7:24 - 7:26 -- this brief cymbal orchestration is a concept I began exploring years ago; it starts with the china and makes its way around the kit from right to left (player's perspective)
7:37 - end -- china orchestration is totally random
