Here's a different video. This is of Meinl Cymbal artist TaRon Lockett with Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles, live in Memphis, TN at Minglewood Hall. This video is us stretching the bounds of acceptability a bit, as clearly there is a second drummer in this video (Cleon Edwards), and clearly to his extreme detriment as a musician, he is not playing Meinl Cymbals. :-) Nonetheless, this is a great band. For those of you that don't know, Cory Henry is one of the full time members of Snarky Puppy. When not on the road with the Pups, the Funk Apostles is a project that he leads.
The tune that the band is playing is the legendary jazz icon Duke Ellington's "Caravan," which the Apostles "flipped," as TaRon puts it. It's super down and dirty, and almost sinister. While I think all of the drumming is a lot of fun to listen to (I can appreciate a solid backbeat that doesn't deviate), I know there will be some that want to see nothing but gymnastics. For those of you that are here for flips and backbends, the drums really start doing their thing at about 4:30.
TaRon's cymbal set up from left to right is as follows:
- Byzance 16" Extra Dry Medium Thin Hihats
- Byzance 20" Extra Dry Thin Crash
- Byzance 22" Vintage Pure Light Ride
- Triple Stack consisting of, from top to bottom: Generation X 12" Filter China w/jingles / M Series 10" Fusion Splash / Soundcaster Custom 12" Piccolo trash china
- Byzance 16" Vintage Trash Crash
