Dave Weckl Drum Solo: A Tribute to Jack DeJohnette (with the Bill Evans Vansband All-Stars 2025)

Open drum solos: I don’t play them as often as I used to, but it’s an opportunity and challenge to spontaneously create, compose, channel, express...and see where it goes.

This was during our last show in Budapest on October 29, 2025. Jack DeJohnette had passed a few days before, which inspired days of revisiting a lot of his playing - remembering just how important he was for me during my formative college years.

This night, I had decided to channel Jack; not in what he played, but in the spirit in which he played. He was a self-described "colorist" and, to me, just the epitome of uninhibited musical expression. It put me in a different mindset and this solo was the result. Hope you enjoy it. RIP Mr. DeJohnette.
