Over 13 million votes for the nominees had to be counted. No less than 120 limousines, 13 top hair stylists, 7500 soda cans and 1500 boxes of candy were needed for the glamorous ceremony held yesterday, November 3, 2005. A lot of efforts. But not without effect: finally we can present you the winners of the 12th annual MTV Europe Music Awards 2005! And the winner is... American trio Green Day emerged as the big winners yesterday night, with two gongs. Drummer Tre Cool and his two colleagues received an award in the category ‘Best Rock’ and they won a ‘Best Album’ award for their album \"American Idiot\".
Best Group Gorillaz only managed to convert five nominations into one award, as \'Best Group\', but they\'ll surely take heart in the fact that they were responsible for one of the most impressive performances of the night. The animated band put on a breathtaking live show fusing 3-D animation and real-life performances.
Best R&B Alicia Keys took an award home as ‘Best R&B’. Miss Keys is doing great: earlier this year she received a Video Music Award, a Grammy and she recorded a special \"Unplugged\" session.
Best Hip Hop American rapper Snoop Dogg, who slightly missed a Video Music Award previously this year, had more luck this time. The Doggfather won an award in the category ‘Best Hip Hop\'.
Best Pop Black Eyed Peas won an award as ‘Best Pop Act’. No wonder because their hit album \"Elephunk\" sold over 7.5 million copies.
Best Alternative Without doubt the loudest of all nominees, System Of A Down received an award in the category ‘Best Alternative’. Drummer John Dolmayan and his fellow band members recently released the album \"Hypnotize\", which seems to become as successful as \"Toxicity\".
Best Belgian/Dutch Act Dutch rock chick Anouk won an award as \'Best Belgian/Dutch Act\'. The singer had been nominated along with Kane, Within Temptation, Gabriel Rios and Soulwax.
Best Male Singer Robbie Williams has already an impressive collection of prizes and awards at home. Yet he gladly accepted the MTV Award in the category ‘Best Male’ this year.
Best Female Shakira was voted ‘Best Female’ and that\'s why she took an award home as well. Earlier this year the Colombian singer had won no less than five Latin America Music Awards.
Best New Act Singer-songwriter James Blunt received an award as ‘Best New Act’. Well deserved, because James made a major breakthrough with his song Beautiful, which has become a monster hit.
Best Song In the category ‘Best Song’ Coldplay won an award for their song Speed Of Sound, from their most recent album \"X&Y\".
Madonna opened the MTV European Music Awards with her new single Hang Up. Previously mentioned band System Of A Down closed the show with a performance of Bring Your Own Bomb.
