"The Figure 8 Hand Drum is one of my favorite designs for a drum because it packs so many possibilities into such a small drum. It is an extremely versatile instrument that can be played by the average percussion enthusiast as well as by the touring professional. I'm thrilled to have such a strong company like Tycoon Percussion stand behind the product and I cannot wait for musicians around the world to have a chance to try this drum for themselves, they will love it!"
Dancing Drum series djembe
In video two you'll see the new Dancing Drum series djembe which has rich bass tones and a thick slap - overall an authentic and impressive sound.
Robert Vilera's signature series timbales
Designed in conjunction with the master timbalero, Robert Vilera's signature series timbales and bells come in wonderful colors and sound amazing.
The 14" and 15" timbale drums have a unique purple satin finish. A heavy duty, fully height-adjustable, tilting timbale stand, cowbell mounting bracket, 2 Robert Vilera signature cowbells, pair of timbale sticks, and tuning wrench are included with each pair of timbales.
Robert Vilera, a Venezuela native, has won fifteen Grammys during his career and has performed with high-profile music acts including Marc Anthony, Paul Simon, and Tito Puente.
Tycoon's Robert Vilera signature timbales offer the contemporary yet traditional sound and power of high-quality, stainless steel shells with heavy-gauge, die-cast counterhoops.
New Brazilian percussion: pandeiros
Tycoon has also expanded its Brazilian percussion range with new pandeiros and tamborims among others. A wood version of the pandeiro is offered in a 10" size, while two versions from from durable ABS plastics are offered in a 10" and 12" size. All three versions are tunable and give the player an almost limitless amount of sound options.
New Brazilian percussion: tamborims
Adding to the pandeiro line is Tycoon Percussion's new series of tamborims. These instruments give a high, sharp timbre with little sustain, and are best used in Samba, Pagode, and Bossa Nova. These tamborims are available in a 6" size and are constructed of a hardwood shell or ABS. Both models include a beater.
New Brazilian percussion: surdos
Surdos have a deep, booming bass sound that really projects and can round out any percussive gathering by producing very deep tones. With the different variations in sizes players can get create different note groupings, and can be fit to accommodate any player's setup.
Tycoon's new surdos that are available in Siam Oak and aluminium (or aluminum if you're from North America). The Tycoon wood surdo produces a fuller more rounded tone, and the aluminum surdo is brighter and has more projection. Each Surdo has 10 lugs for precision tuning, and comes with a mallet.
Tycoon Percussion's Surdos are available with 16", 18", 20", and 22" head diameters
Dancing Drum's Talking Drum
Last but not least is Tycoon's new and improved Talking Drum, co-developed with Steve Campbell and Lindsay Rust, who are the co-founders and directors of Dancing Drum. A little bit bigger than the previous design, but with the same unique characteristics in shape and tone.
In short: sit back and relax while Joel Knight, Artist Relations Associate for Tycoon Percussion, gives a booth tour and reveals all the new products for this year in two videos.
Dual Overhead Chamber 'DOHC' Cajon
A new product that's not featured in the videos, is Tycoon's Dual Overhead Chamber 'DOHC' Cajon. This distinctive cajon features two separate chambers and sound holes, creating the ultimate combination of sound. The snare-less base chamber produces clean and traditional deep bass tones, while the top chamber, equipped with a double set of snare wires, offers crisp and tight snare slaps.
Constructed from 100% environmentally-friendly Siam Oak wood that has been sustainably harvested from raw rubber plantations, the DOHC Cajon is the most unique and versatile drum in the cajon market today and is a must-try instrument for any percussionist. Business Development Associate Ivan Martinez says:
"This cajon is exactly what every drummer has been waiting for. The separation of the snare and bass areas really is key. Players are able to get the snare sound when they want something that is really going to cut through the music, as well as being able to produce nice bass tones that actually sound the way a bass drum does. It's the absolute perfect combination."
The DOHC Cajon is available in 32 and 35 sizes.
Pro Series Djembe
The new 12" Pro Series Djembe has a traditional West African shell shape that produces a rich open tone and a profound bass tone. The quad-ring design features 2 top and 2 bottom rings for superior tuning capabilities. Constructed of hand-selected, environmentally-friendly Siam Oak wood, the 12" Pro Series Djembe has a smooth, hand-rubbed matte finish. Additional features include a calf skin head secured by a high tension bright red rope and includes a decorative brass metal design located at the bottom of the shell.
Shaker Crash
One the biggest downfalls of being a hand percussionist is that there are so many instruments to play and sounds to create, but you only have two hands. A disappointing example of this is having to stop playing your drum in order to play shekere, which is decidedly not optimal. The Shaker Crash solves this issue. This nifty little mounted percussion instrument is constructed of premium quality steel to deliver a short, bright crash, similar to a shekere and it allows percussionists to achieve this sound with only one hand.
