Former Beatles drummer and vocalist Ringo Starr's birthplace has been saved from destruction following a public campaign.
Liverpool City Council planned to demolish the dilapidated three-bedroomed Victorian terrace at 9 Madryn Street as part of a housing regeneration scheme in the Dingle area of the city.
Housing Minister Grant Shapps intervened after a group of residents wrote to him about their concerns.
Ringo (real name: Richard Starkey) was born in the terraced property on July 7, 1940 but his family moved away when he was still a baby.

In 2010 English Heritage refused to grant Ringo's birthplace listed building status on the grounds that the drummer only lived there for a very short time, it had no associations with the Beatles' success and was not architecturally or historically significant enough.
