Pauli Lovejoy, real name: Paul Stanley McKenzie, brings a wealth of musical expertise and live performance experience to the new series. Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading drummers and musical directors, Lovejoy has been featured in national press for his rhythmic mastery - including accolades from publications such as The Guardian and WIRED.
Lovejoy’s recent high-profile work includes serving as the touring musical director and percussionist for Harry Styles’ global 'Love On Tour' for over two years. In that role, he became a fan favourite while helping shape the live sound and performance energy behind one of the decade’s biggest concert productions.
His credits span a remarkable range of artists and musical styles. As Musical Director, Lovejoy has collaborated with influential contemporary acts including Jamie xx, FKA twigs, Maggie Rogers, Charlie Puth, Lizzo and Florence + The Machine - a testament to his versatility and ability to navigate diverse musical landscapes. He has also toured as a drummer with artists such as Damon Albarn, Robyn, Sampha and Bobby Womack.
A historic milestone in Lovejoy’s career came when he became the first artist to perform at The Sphere as the Atomic MC/DJ during U2’s 40-night inaugural residency in Las Vegas - underscoring his presence at the intersection of live performance and cutting-edge event production.
Bram van den Berg
At the time of U2’s groundbreaking residency at The Sphere, the band’s live rhythm section also reflected a rare moment in U2’s history. Dutch drummer Bram van den Berg (Krezip) stepped in behind the kit during the residency, temporarily replacing longtime drummer Larry Mullen Jr. While van den Berg anchored U2’s performances on stage, Lovejoy’s role as Atomic MC/DJ operated in a parallel, complementary space - bridging live band performance with electronic, spoken-word and DJ-led elements.
In addition to his performance work, Lovejoy has released critically acclaimed music under the moniker Pauli The PSM and has composed original scores for high-profile commercial and artistic campaigns, such as YouTube Originals’ Black Renaissance featuring Michelle and Barack Obama. His 2023 Saucy Tour sold out major cities across the US, UK and Europe, and he is currently working on his debut solo album.
As Musical Director for SNL UK, Lovejoy will play a pivotal role in shaping how the series defines its musical identity - building on the rich tradition of live performance music that has been a hallmark of the Saturday Night Live format for more than five decades.
The announcement of Lovejoy’s appointment comes alongside key creative hires, including Annie Hardinge as Costume Designer and Kevin Fortune as Head of Wigs, Hair & Make-Up, as well as recent leadership appointments in production, directing and writing.
With its forthcoming launch on Sky and NOW, Saturday Night Live UK aims to blend the classic live-comedy format with British creative sensibilities, and Lovejoy’s musical leadership will be central to that vision as the series prepares to make its mark on the UK entertainment landscape.
