Both musicians were killed by gunfire when they refused to play another encore.
At four o'clock in the morning the musicians of Banda La Excelencia felt they had performed long enough. Plus the owner pulled the plug as it was long after closing time.
But four drunken and aggressive men in the audience demanded that the group would continue playing.
To make it clear that they did not joke, one of the men detonated a grenade. People panicked and ran out of the bar.
The band fled for the exit too but the musicians were met with a hail of bullets killing two of them.
The gunmen escaped in a car. Police believe the perpetrators have ties to one of the notorious Mexican drug gangs.
Violence associated with the drug war has claimed more than 34,000 lives in Mexico since December 2006.
Banda La Excelencia de Jonathan Martínez is a group playing "banda": a brass-based form of traditional music. It is not the same formation as La Excelencia, the Latin band that was founded in 2005 in the United States by percussionists José Vázquez-Cofresi and Julian Silva.
