Justin was hanging around to support his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, who was serving as MTV News' special pre-show correspondent.

The multi-talented star, who is no stranger to the occasional drum solo, still surprised pretty much everyone who saw it.

It's not the first time Justin played on Nate's kit. At the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento, California, Justin took the stage during the band's set , sat down behind the drums and banged out a blazing solo. According to the Cobra Starship skinsman, that set the precedent for the VMA pre-show incident. Nate, who's only 5.4" tall, joklingly states:

"Justin showed me what he could do, and it was good, so I was like, 'You can come back and do it whenever you want.' I think he just took full advantage of that. (...) Justin could beat me up, so I can't approach him and say anything. "
