Richard Coughlan, original drummer and co-founding member of UK progrock pioneers Caravan, has died. He passed away at his home on Sunday December 1, 2013.
The 66-year-old drummer had been in poor health for the last few years. Before he had to quit due to his condition, Richard played drums for Caravan for over forty three years.
Caravan were part of the celebrated Canterbury Scene of the late 1960s that also included Soft Machine, and Camel among others.
Early on, Richard was also involved with the Wilde Flowers, a band that also featured Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers, both founding members of the Soft Machine.
Despite not being well Richard played percussion at Caravan's reunion gig in London in December 2010 alongside current drummer Mark Walker and received a standing ovation afterwards.
Richard Coughlan is survived by his wife, Sue, and daughter, Beth.
