Mike Joyce, former drummer with The Smiths, has criticised Morrissey for singing the band's songs at the Glastonbury festival on Friday, June 24. The drummer tweeted:"Great performance from M at Glasto but didn't like the cover versions. M was in the group... but not in the band, those tunes belong to them. The 'band' were the musicians in The Smiths... Mozzer wasn't in the 'band'; M was the singer/lyricist in the group. (..)
Mike later added:
"I think "cover versions" was maybe the wrong phrase. I just didn't enjoy The Smiths songs. He sounded great tho "
Morrissey played five of his former band's tracks during his performance, including This Charming Man and Meat Is Murder.
Mike Joyce's mockery may reignite his feud with the singer. The drummer sued Morrissey and Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr in the 1990s for an increased share of the band's royalties.
He won the case and has exchanged barbed comments with Morrissey in interviews and internet postings ever since.
