Paul McCartney's handwritten letter to a mystery drummer offering an audition for The Beatles has sold for 35,000 pounds, which is the equivalent of $55,400. The letter was found in a book at a yard sale. It was expected to bring in bids at an excess of $11,000.
Even the Christie's auction house professionals were surprised when a European buyer made the mega offer that turned into the winning bid over the telephone. Granted, this is a pretty special piece of pop memorabilia, given it’s a one-of-a-kind nature.
Dated 12 August, 1960, the letter was discovered inside a book bought at a car boot sale in Liverpool by a coin collector.
The letter was written by a young Sir Paul in response to a notice in the Liverpool Echo that read 'Drummer - Young - Free' because he wished to find a drummer before the Beatles' two-month stint in Hamburg, Germany.
Nothing is known about who the letter was addressed to or if they were auditioned.
Three days after the letter's date they travelled to Germany with their new drummer Pete Best.
