Todd Sucherman is the man with the snares, and a lot of them! Moreover, the man with such tight grooves and technique that will make you drool when watching him perform. The videos of his performance at the London Drum Show proof it all. Todd Sucherman seems relentless when behind the drums. The STYX-drummer is one of those guys that just doesn't get tired, loses focus, or breaks down even a little bit. While he is on stage, the energy blows through the room and finds you, if you are up for it or not. Experience it all up close in the videos with this article from the first day of the London Drum Show.
Growing up in a musical family really helped Todd getting there as a professional artist. In the Chicago based Sucherman family, where all members play an instrument, it is no surprise Todd Sucherman was already performing at the age of six. Learning the first skills from his big band drumming father, he later studied at the famous Berklee College of Music with the legendary teacher Gary Chaffee.
During his career he recorded over 1000 radio and TV spots. Todd has been playing with STYX since 1995, taking the band's drum seat after drummer John Panozzo had died. Before and after joining Styx, Todd played and recorded for many artists. A few huge names are REO Speedwagon, Chicago's singer Peter Cetera and Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys). He also plays in the band of singer, and wife, Taylor Mills.
All this experience in studying, playing and recording led up to his two instructional dvd's. The first one from 2008, 'Methods and Mechanics,' won Best Instructional DVD in Modern Drummer. 'Methods & Mechanics 2' covers even more on all that a drummer needs to know, including the hilarious bloopers.
Recently, Todd was voted #1 Best Prog Rock Drummer in the 2015 Modern Drummer magazine's Readers Poll. That will be no surprise to you after watching the London Drum Show videos. On publication date of this article, Todd is on a spring clinic tour in the US. In May he will be headlining the Australian magazine Drumscene Live Tour with Jojo Mayer and Jason Heerah, with special guests Dom Famularo and Will Harpur. That is quite an agenda, considering he plays like a 100 shows a year with Styx as well.
Todd Sucherman is one of those true all round amazing drummers, a great teacher and true inspirer that just hits you, even when playing brushes that speak just as loud as the Rock idiom he is best known for.
