Renowned Swiss cymbal maker Paiste will introduce a lot of new products at the 2016 Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, California nest week, including new Artist Inspiration cymbals that are created by Paiste featuring artists' uncompromising sound ideas and visual concepts.
Paiste's upcoming signature ride cymbals were developed with artists Danny Carey, Carl Palmer, John "JR" Robinson, and André "Dédé" Ceccarelli. Here's a sneak peek with the first details.
Danny Carey – Monad Paiste created the 'Monad' 22" Dry Heavy Ride in collaboration with the eclectic Danny Carey, uniquely known for his infusion of geometry, science and metaphysics into the art of drumming. The resulting playing style, which makes extensive use of polyrhythmic figures, odd meters and complex time signatures, is a characteristic feature of the sound of the Grammy Award winning band Tool.
The newly developed model is based on the traditional Signature Dry Heavy Ride, which has been Danny’s main Ride cymbal since the 1990s. In this reincarnation, the model is coated in translucent purple, using Paiste's proprietary ColorSound process, and features a lathed bell, using the unique Reflector finish.
According to Paiste, the 'Monad' 22" Dry Heavy Ride is a decidedly heavy cymbal capable of strong and cutting ride playing at elevated volume levels. It features a pronounced, articulate ping over a controlled, dark, deep and complex wash.
The strong, full, yet very musical bell is well separated. As a tribute to Danny's inspiration, the label 'Monad' and three metaphysical symbols, being Danny's personal choices in keeping with his esoteric interests, have been placed on the cymbal.
Carl Palmer – Vir2osity The 'Vir2osity' 20" Duo Ride was created in collaboration with the legendary Carl Palmer, the drum virtuoso behind the progressive rock supergroup ELP, who powerfully incorporated classical and jazz influences into the
early rock drumming of the 1970s and continues to distinguish himself with his inimitable and energetic drumming style that highlights technical prowess, speed and dexterity.
The newly developed model is loosely based on the original Signature Dry Dark Ride, with its characteristic, pronounced hammer marks on an earthy dark surface, being the result of intense heat treatment. The outer
perimeter and the bell of the cymbal are then lathed using the unique Reflector finish.
The 'Vir2osity' 20" Duo Ride executes Carl’s exclusive ideas for a variable ride cymbal with distinct playing zones. In general, this heavy cymbal features a fairly raw, earthy, complex wash that’s very tight and controlled. A press release states that the overall glassy stick sound tends towards a drier, more raw and wooden note in the un-lathed zone, while the lathed zone presents a livelier, crisper and richer ping. The bell is well separated and decidedly loud and piercing.
As a tribute to Carl's inspiration, the label 'Vir2osity' and a rendition of Carl's personal emblem have been placed on the cymbal.
John "JR" Robinson – Signature Groove The 2002 24" Swish Ride 'Signature Groove' was created in collaboration with the prolific studio legend John "JR" Robinsonwho kicked off his career via appearances with Chaka Khan’s Rufus and the Quincy Jones / Michael Jackson project 'Off the Wall' in the late 1970s and went on to become one of the most recorded session and studio drummers in history, along the way developing his signature groove and inimitable "big" sound.
The newly developed model was conceived by JR as a complimentary ride cymbal to his Masters 24" Deep Ride. It is based on a variation of the traditional Chinese style cymbal shape commonly referred to as 'Swish', and executed utilizing 2002 Alloy with its energetic and brilliant character.
According to Paiste, the new 'Signature Groove' 24" Swish Ride is a clearly large cymbal with immense sound capacity and an extensive range of dynamics, being fully controllable at various volume levels. It is said to feature an earthy ping over an exotic and energetic wash and is capable of swelling, trash infused crashes for dramatic accents.
As a tribute to JR's inspiration, the label 'Signature Groove' and the musical notation of the famous JR drum intro to Michael Jackson's Rock with You have been placed on the cymbal.
André "Dédé" Ceccarelli – Blue Bird The Masters 20" Mellow Ride 'Blue Bird' was created in collaboration with the inexhaustible André "Dédé" Ceccarelli, the iconic French Jazz drummer whose over half century career has won him numerous collaborations with
international top acts in jazz and beyond, and who is especially known for his subtlety, diversity, artistry, wide ranging ability and musical charm that effortlessly transcends genres.
This previously released model is being re-launched under a new designation due to a legal challenge to the previous model designation by a competitive manufacturer. The cymbal was conceived by Dédé as a sophisticated ride cymbal for application in smaller instrumentations and intimate settings. According to Paiste, it features a silvery ping over a warm, mellow wash. Akin to Dédé, it easily transcends Jazz and finds broad musical application wherever refined articulation and cultured style are required.
Hand-made All cymbals in Paiste's Signature Series and the 2002 range are made by hand in Switzerland using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century.
