The 16th annual Maryland Day, held on April 26, showcased the School of Public Health's initiatives and commitment to improving health access and information, including raising awareness and promote healthy living through the beat of the drum.
The Maryland Center for Health Equity, in the School of Public Health, had teamed up with the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center to present the 'Health Equity Drum Circle: Drum Beats for Health and Wellness'.
Together they hoped to beat the current Guinness World Record for largest hand drum ensemble with 1,301 percussionists.
Approximately 650 to 700 participants gathered in Byrd Stadium for the record attempt. While they did not set a a new World Record, they formed the largest hand drum ensemble in the history of Maryland Day and the largest hand drum ensemble in the State of Maryland.
Stephen Thomas, director of the Maryland Center for Health Equity, enthusiastically led the ensemble, with help from local expert percussionists including Baba Ras D, Tom Shelley, and Kristen Arant. Check out these pics from the event on Flickr.com.
