Renowned drummer Tal Bergman has a new jazz-funk band called Rock Candy Funk Party. They are putting out their debut album, 'We Want Groove', on January 29. In addition to playing drums, Tal also produced the album.
Tal, who is the drummer in Joe Bonamassa's touring band, has also recorded and played with Joe Zawinul, Chaka Khan, Herb Alpert, Terence Trent D'Arby, Billy Idol, Simple Minds plus Rod Stewart, for whom he associate produced the multiplatinum album 'It Had To Be You: The Great American Songbook'.
Tal's new band, Rock Candy Funk Party, reboots classic '70s and '80s jazz-funk and delivers a sound that's as celebratory as the name suggests.
The group is powered by a lineup of world renowned players: Tal Bergman (drums), Joe Bonamassa (guitar), Ron DeJesus (guitar), Mike Merritt (bass) and Renato Neto (keys), who - in their own words - came together for the sheer fun of making music, and a mutual love of genre-blurring grooves.
The album features nine tracks —eight originals and one cover — full of space and texture, that mash up funk, jazz, and rock. It includes a dvd with a making-of featurette, two in-the-studio featurettes and the official music video for opening track Octopus-e.
In title and spirit, the album tips its hat to Miles Davis' classic 1982 live instrumental lp 'We Want Miles', which Merritt says "was kind of a template for our project".
