At Musikmesse 2011, Europe's leading music trade fair, Korg has unveiled the Wavedrum Mini. The company has used technology from their popular Wavedrum series to create this new portable percussion synth.
100 ready-to-play sounds The Wavedrum Mini offers 100 professionally programmed and ready-to-play sounds, from acoustic-emulating drum and percussion to cutting-edge sounds possible only on a synthesizer. Bass, tuned percussion and stringed instruments are also included, allowing both rhythmic and melodic performances.
Sounds can be triggered from Wavedrum Mini's expressive surface pad. The tone of the Wavedrum Mini responds to the location at which you strike the pad, and the amount of force applied, moving beyond a one-dimensional sound. The pad responds sensitively to every aspect of your strike – open shots, slap shots, and more – allowing for a range of sophisticated performance techniques and complex musical expression.
Dynamic sensor clip Additional sounds can be accessed at the same time by attaching the Sensor Clip to any object, including a table top, cup or your foot, transforming the object into a percussion instrument. In addition, 10 multi-effects are available. The effects vary from spatial-type effects (delay, chorus, and reverb) to modern effects including filters and pitch-shifters that radically transform the sound, and distortion-type effects that deliver analog-style warmth.
100 rhythm patterns The Wavedrum Mini contains 100 rhythm patterns covering a range of styles. These patterns can be used as a beginner's guide to help keep a steady rhythm, or to keep the groove going while performing or jamming. In addition to the preset patterns, the Looper function will record and play back any Wavedrum Mini performance. An unlimited number of overdubs can be added, creating complex, multi-sound patterns. The Looper's total record length is 25 seconds.
The Wavedrum Mini is highly portable and can be enjoyed any place, at any time. An AC adapter is included but the Wavedrum Mini can also run on batteries, so you can use it outdoors such as a street performance. The built-in speaker allows the Wavedrum Mini to be used alone, for a performance or on the spur of the moment at an impromptu jam session. A headphone output is also available for private practice.
For jam sessions or street performances in particular, the Wavedrum Mini comes with a strap, so that it can be secured to a seated performer. The Sensor Clip can then be attached to the upper opening of your shoe. Tapping the foot will create one sound; playing the pad, another, creating a simple kit.
The Korg Wavedrum Mini retails for £299, so expect £249 (about $400 USD or €285) on the street. Available Summer 2011.
