"There's always been a problem with drum kits being so heavy. I have a band and we gig. Every time we go to a place we have to take the drum kit in the car first and then come back with everybody else - so it's a bit of a hassle. I think at the time I might have been tapping on my legs, and I thought, I know: why don't I see if I can put a drum kit in my trousers."
The sensors in the trousers are hooked up to a backpack with circuitry and speakers. Each sensor corresponds to a different drum, and hitting them duplicates the sound of their real-world equivalents. Watch Aseem Mishra playing his drumtrousers on BBC. Too bad you can't hear them well though...
Aseem says he's working on a wireless version that'll transmit to far larger sound systems.
Aseem won a trophy and a prize of £1,000 in the Young Engineer of Great Britain Competition. It's the second time he wins: last year Aseem won the first prize for a set of drums that light up when hit.
