Max Weinberg's 19-year-old son Jay Weinberg will step in for his father on a small number of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gigs this summer. It will probably only be for the European leg of the tour, since that coincides with the June 2nd premiere of Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show. Max serves as Conan's bandleader on the show."Once again, I want to express my appreciation to Conan O'Brien, and everyone on his team, for making it possible for Max to continue to do double duty for both us and for him. We promise to return him in one piece."
E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt recently stated that he finds it hard to picture a show without Max:
"There’s no drummer that could replace Max. There might be someone temporary that comes in and we’ll have to adjust the show accordingly. What nobody understands is that not only is Max a great drummer, Max reads Bruce’s mind. You can’t learn that."
Max Weinberg joined the E Street Band in 1974 and hasn’t missed a single show since. His son Jay usually plays in the band The Reveling. Jay has been rehearsing with E Street in Asbury Park since last week.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band start their European trek with a performance at Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands on May 30, 2009.
