\"A key concept of learning to play music is to assimilate the vocabulary, concepts, and techniques of earlier generations of musicians, in order to understand how the musical language of today evolved. This is especially true for jazz drumming. The “giants” of jazz drumming assimilated the innovations of the generations before them, and they were then able to build on these ideas, in order to contribute new concepts to language of jazz drumming.\"
Inspirational drummers
The program includes a one-hour live performance with Steve Smith\'s group, Jazz Legacy, from the 2006 Modern Drummer Festival. The music that they played at the concert was inspired by, and associated with, some of Steve\'s favorite jazz drummers: Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones and Tony Williams. Continues Steve Smith:
\"As drummers, we are all “standing on the shoulders” of these musical giants, these are some of the drummers that laid the foundation of not only jazz drumming, but all genres modern drumming.\"
John Riley\'s contribution
The dvd includes a two-hour analysis and demonstration of many of the ideas that Steve Smith played at the concert, and the various drum solos he performed in the studio. This is accomplished with the assistance of John Riley – master jazz drummer, educator and author.
John and Steve discuss how studying the giants of jazz drumming, has impacted them. The discussion is full of insightful observations and clear demonstrations to help viewers gain a deeper understanding of jazz drumming.
