More than 200 jazz musicians and their supporters were nominated for the 10th annual Jazz Awards. Winners were voted on by the approximately 400 members of JJA, who are comprised of writers, broadcasters, photographers and new media professionals worldwide.
Saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins took the top honors at the 10th annual Jazz Awards, notching a double victory as musician and tenor saxophonist of the year.The 75-year-old Rollins re-established himself at the top of the jazz scene during the past year with his Grammy-winning CD Without a Song: The 9/11 Concert, his first live recording in nearly 20 years.
The Jazz Awards are presented in 41 categories, including Lifetime Achievement in Jazz and in Jazz Journalism, and also honor jazz advocates, activists, altruists, aiders and abettors in an \"A Team\" selected by an executive committee of the JJA\'s freelance writers, photographers, broadcasters, educators and website creators.
