The change from his previous brand Pearl comes a bit sudden, considering last year when his Pearl Signature Tricolon Free-floating Snare Drum was released at the NAMM Show 2015. Next to that, another signature snare model from the Chili Peppers' drummer was introduced there: the Apple Red lacquered finish. Both major selling items.

However, artist often change brands without anyone suspecting anything. Chad explains his choice as clear as possible:

"After 30 years with the same drum company, I've decided to make a switch to playing DW. They're located right here in California, and I'm working with closely with them to design a killer, custom drumset to take out on tour this May. It's going to be slamming!"
