Drummer Joey Covington, who played with Jefferson Airplane from 1970-72 and later in the offshoot band Hot Tuna, has passed away. Joey died in a car crash in his hometown Palm Springs, California on June 4. He was 67 years old. The drummer was not wearing a seat belt.
According to a local CBS news station, Joey's Honda Civic slammed into a wall on the side of the road, shutting down traffic for several hours. Police reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Police don't suspect alcohol or drugs were involved, a stroke or heart attack is beloeved to led to the crash.
Joey Covington was a self-taught drummer. He first drummed for Pacific Gas & Electric, followed by Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane.
