Author, teacher and performing artist Jeff Johnson has released 'The Level System'. A natural drum technique method for developing control of accents and dynamics. The book is an overview of The Level System, as taught by percussion education greats George Lawrence Stone and Joe Morello.
In 'The Level System', Johnson includes lessons that cover the techniques and rudiments of drumming, as well natural technique. With examples that are short, as to draw attention to the task at hand, the guidebook teaches percussion students to transition instantly between accented and unaccented notes, as well performing within an extreme dynamic range, free of tension.
The exercises are developed to aid new and experienced drummers alike, preparing the hands for the upcoming note, one stroke in advance, by utilizing full strokes, downstrokes, upstrokes, and tap strokes.
Exercises are easy to understand through the use of in-depth explanations, and musical examples, including helpful graphics and example photos. The concepts taught are geared for the reader to incorporate into their performance material and method books. Drumset players can also benefit from both the hand exercises and the drumset exercises in the last chapters. An introduction to the method, notes on technique, and tips on playing with a metronome are also included.
Jeff Johnson is extremely active as a performer, private instructor, and clinician.
