In our first lesson I would like to present to you some different types of samba “grooves”. These grooves al have the same basis: the same pattern of a traditional samba, but in different members. So, let’s see some of those ideas.

Figure 1 on the Lesson sheet The left hand will play on the rim of the snare drum, the pattern that’s usually done with the bass drum.
Figures 2 and 3 on the Lesson Sheet The bass drum will make the pattern of Samba Funk.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 on the Lesson Sheet The right hand will play the “Telecoteco” on the cymbal or on the cowbell. Normally, this pattern is played with the left hand. And there they are, suggestions for your right hand.
The left foot can be played on the beat or off the beat with the hi hat. I particularly prefer the demarcation done on the beat (see that the movement is fast), because this way it gets more swing.
Grooves 1, 2 and 3 on the Lesson sheet Now we’ll see three examples of grooves, with the examples above already applied. Listen to the examples and an improvisation of Alexandre.
