'Birth of the Cool' is an album which collects twelve songs recorded by the Miles Davis quintet for Capitol Records in 1949 and 1950.
The alsbum features innovative arrangements strongly inspired by classical music, and mark a major development in post-bebop jazz.
As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz.
Here Miles Davis embraced the "cool" arranging style of Gil Evans, who emphasized a diminished use of vibrato in both reeds and brass, producing a drier, "cool" sound.
