In a move that should surprise no one, this first solo album from Rush singer, bassist, and keyboard player Geddy Lee sounds a lot like, well, Rush. But while this means that Rush loyalists will love this album as much as longtime detractors will hate it, both will also notice the subtle differences between My Favorite Headache and the other albums Geddy's played on.
Besides employing a drummer (Soundgarden/Pearl Jam skin basher Matt Cameron) and a guitarist (k.d. lang collaborator Ben Mink) who sound nothing like their Rush counterparts, there are also a number of songs on which Lee approaches a more polished pop-rock territory than he ever has with Rush.
Even so, things never stray too far away from his work with the band he's fronted for more than 25 years (with his distinctively high-pitched voice, how could he?), which is probably why -- again, to no one's surprise -- the album's best moments are the Rush-like progressive hard rock tunes that have become Lee's stock in trade.
