For the Halloween 78 recordings at the Palladium, Frank Zappa led a powerful "no-horns" lineup that famously featured two bassists and the debut of legendary drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.

The band members on this Zappa Records release are:

Vinnie Colaiuta: Drums, percussion, and "seal calls".
Ed Mann: Percussion and vocals.
Arthur Barrow: Bass, acoustic guitar, and vocals.
Patrick O'Hearn: Fretless bass and vocals (rejoined the band for this run to complement Barrow).
Frank Zappa: Lead guitar, vocals, and "Master of Ceremonies".
Denny Walley: Slide guitar, rhythm guitar, and vocals (taking over many lead vocal parts after Ike Willis's departure earlier that month).
Tommy Mars: Keyboards and vocals.
Peter Wolf: Keyboards.
L. Shankar (credited as "The Bionic Parrot"): Electric violin.
Warren Cuccurullo: Spoken word/guest appearance (notably on "The Story of Ms. X")
