Op 2 april 1946 start Katsumi Yanagisawa in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan, met het maken van muziekstandaards. In die tijd is er weliswaar vraag naar percussie-instrumenten, maar ze worden vrijwel niet gemaakt. In 1950 is de situatie nog steeds niet veranderd. Katsumi begrijpt dat hier een gat in de markt ligt, en begint met het bouwen van wat bass drums, snare drums en standaards onder de naam "Pearl Industry, Ltd."

In 1953 verandert Katsumi de naam in "Pearl Musical Instrument Company" en bouwt volledige drumstellen, timpani, Latin percussie-instrumenten, bekkens en accessoires. De zaken gaan goed en vanaf 1957 helpt Katsumi's oudste zoon Mitsuo mee. Laatstgenoemde zet een exportafdeling op en bouwt ook buiten Japan verder aan Pearl als percussiemerk.

De wereldwijde vraag naar drumstellen is in 1961 zo groot geworden, dat Pearl in Chiba, Japan, een fabriek bouwt van maar liefst 4500(?) vierkante meter. De drumskits zijn niet duur en dragen de naam van de distributeur, zoals Maxwin, CB-700, Crest, Revelle, Revere, Lyra, Majestic, Whitehall, Apollo, Toreador, Roxy en Coronet. In totaal zijn er meer dan dertig merken.

In 1965 formuleert Mitsuo een lange-termijnplan om Pearl aan de top van de percussie-industrie brengen. Als onderdeel van dit streven gaat Pearl:

1. nieuwe producten ontwikkelen die net zo goed of beter zijn dan de gevestigde merken;
   
2. gebruik maken van de nieuwste geautomatiseerde machines om de produktie te laten stijgen
   
3. in Taiwan een zusterfabriek opzetten
   
4. een wereldwijd netwerk van verkoop- en servicepunten opzetten

Door voortdurend met produktinnovatie bezig te zijn, komt Pearl in 1972 met fiberglas en houten/fiberglas trommels. Van een fabriek in 1973 groeit Pearls prduktie uit tot vijf fabrieken. In 1978 komt Pearl met de Vari-Pitch Cannons die zijn ontwikkeld door Randy May. Een jaar later, in 1979, wordt het Syncussion electronisch drumsystem geintroduceerd.

In de jaren tachtig en negentig blijft Pearl succesvol aan de top staan. Wereldwijd is de Pearl Export-serie het meest verkochte drumstel.

April 2, 1946. Katsumi Yanagisawa starts manufacturing music stands in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. By 1949 Katsumi's music stand business grows steadily fueled by growing music education in the schools and by the popularity of jazz music. Although there's demand, domestically produced percussion instruments are practically non existent. Realizing this need, Katsumi starts building drums in 1950. Just a few bass drums, snare drums, and stands. He names his company "Pearl Industry, Ltd."

By 1953 Katsumi's company is called "Pearl Musical Instrument Company". It expands manufacturing to drum sets, marching drums, timpani, Latin percussion instruments, cymbals, stands, and accessories. In 1957 Katsumi's eldest son, Mitsuo, joins Pearl. Seeing the sales potential of markets outside Japan, he forms an export division and starts exporting products through agents and trading companies.

In 1961 Pearl builds a 15,000 sq. foot factory in Chiba, Japan to fill the worldwide demand for drum sets spurred by the popularity of Rock and Roll. These sets are inexpensive and bares the brand name of the distributor; such as Maxwin, CB-700, Crest, Revelle, Revere, Lyra, Majestic, Whitehall, Apollo, Toreador, Roxy, Coronet, and others...over 30 brands in all.

Mitsuo formulates a long-range plan to bring Pearl to the forefront of the percussion industry in 1965. Under his plan, Pearl would:

1. develop new products with quality equal to or better than products offered by established brand name companies;
   
2. install the latest automated machinery in the Chiba factory to increase production;
   
3. establish a sister factory in Taiwan;
   
4. establish a world-wide sales and service network.

1972: Pearl introduces fiberglass and wood fiberglass shells. Starting with one factory in 1973, Pearl's Taiwanese operation now encompasses five factories whose output supplies virtually the entire worldwide market for Pearl products. The original Chiba factory now caters to the domestic Japanese market producing drum sets, marching drums, timpani, and symphonic chimes. Vari-Pitch Cannons, invented by Randy May, are introduced in 1978. One year leater, in 1979, the Syncussion electric drum system is introduced.

In the eighties and nineties, Pearl continues to stay at the forefront of the percussion industry. The Pearl Export-series is worldwide the best selling drumkit.
