Zoltan Csörsz, Jr. is a Hungarian drummer, living and working in Sweden, who is most well known as the ex-drummer with the progressive rock band The Flower Kings.
Zoltan Csörsz plays drums in Karmakanic. He also joined The Flower Kings in 2003. His involvement was instantly noticeable, as he brought out the jazz tendencies of bassis Jonas Reingold.
Zoltan Csörsz was born July 4th 1976 in Hungary. At the age of 25 he became a full member in FlowerKings, May 2001 after being recommended by Jonas for a Tomas Bodin solo recording. Tomas and Jonas were very impressed by the energy and dynamic style of his playing and wanted him to join FlowerKings full time and Zoltan was impressed by the ambitious project of FlowerKings.
However Jonas was not new to Zoltans abilities as they have been playing together in more jazz oriented projects since almost 10 years back. Zoltan is one of the busiest drummers in Sweden, very much in demand for his all around capability and versatility.
Zoltan Csörsz has been playing since the age of five, starting to win awards at the age of nine in an international talent contest in Hungary in 1986, also televised on national television in Hungary. This led to appearances together with the famous Hungarian Jazz musician Szakcsi at festivals and television shows. Szakcsi, who has played with drummers like Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, Omar Hakim and Martin "Smitty" Smith, and who obviously has very exacting demands, had Zoltan as his absolute favorite.
Several other awards have followed, both in Hungary and Sweden. In October 2000, the Hungarian national television made a documentary on Zoltan Csörsz, and what had happened since he won the talent contest in 1986.
Zoltan Csörsz has a formal musical education both at the University level, as well as the Jazz Institute of Malmoe, Sweden. While in school, he played with a variety of bands like Latin Flavor (well respected on the Swedish hip hop scene and featured on MTV) and The Family Tree (Swedish soul-funk band who had a hit with the song Together). He also played with Tragedy, a Swedish rock band whose demo generated a lot of interest and an article in Guitar Player Magazine in 1996.
In 1999 he joined the Bentzon Brotherhood, led by Nikolaj Bentzon, a band that previously featured Mike Clark of the Herbie Hancock Headhunters on drums.
The last couple of years Zoltan has played with all the leading Scandinavian and American jazz musicians, like the legendary James Moody, Billy Harper Putte Wickman, Jan Lundgren, Lina Nyberg, Anders Bergcrantz, Jacob Karlzon, Johan Leijonhuvud, Maggi Olin and Kasper Vadsholt and many others. He has appeared on television, worked as a studio musician and played at various jazz festivals in Sweden, Denmark and Hungary.
More recently Zoltan Csörsz has been touring around the world with progressive rockers FlowerKings, beating the drum in odd time signatures and contribute to the dynamic palette and the relentless beauty and bombast that is the trademark of progressive rock and Flowerkings in particular. Zoltan replaced initial Flower Kings skinsman Jamie Salazar.
Csörsz stayed with The Flower Kings before leaving the band in 2005. He then rejoined the band in 2007 to record their tenth album, 'The Sum of No Evil'.
In 2011, Zoltan Csörsz played drums on the Kee Marcello album 'Redux: Europe'.
In 2012 Zoltan teamed up with Blake Carpenter (The Minstrel's Ghost), Marco Chiappini(Gandalf's Project), Troy James Martin (LeeAnne Savage) and Colin Tench (Corvus Stone) and (Bunchakeze) to record the album 'The Road To Avalon' due out late 2012. This is Zoltan's first progressive rock album in many years and has already been touted as one of the best albums of the year.
Zoltan Csörsz is currently on tour with Jan Lundgren and LaGaylia Frazier. He is also leading his own band, The Zoltan Csörsz Trio.
