Udo Lindenberg is probably best known as German vocalist and composer. However, he has also enjoyed a career as professional drummer, playing with thge City Preachers, Germany’s first folk-rock-band, in the late 1960s.
During his childhood Udo Lindenberg developed a feel for rhythm. Taking every opportunity to drum, Lindenberg used petrol cans in lieu of a drum kit. Later Udo Lindenberg obtained his first real drum kit and in 1962 he began a period of journeying in order to learn his craft.
His wandering took him to northern Germany and Gunter Hampel after which he travelled to France, Tripoli and onwards to the Music Academy at Münster.
1968 found Udo Lindenberg in Hamburg where he decided against a career at sea and joined a troupe of folk musicians as their drummer...
Soon after Udo founded his first own band, called Free Orbit. After a short jazz stint as a drummer in Klaus Doldinger's band Passport, and an English-language debut album, Udo Lindenberg started writing German lyrics and released his German debut, 'Daumen Im Wind' (1972).
Udo Lindenberg has worked collaboratively with various local and international artists (Eric Burdon, Helen Schneider, David Bowie and Gianna Nannini) on a number of projects.
